My Fond Memories of the GNFC
by Wayne Weber

  • Dozing on the bow of Dan’s wooden boat, in Eel Bay, at Wellesley Island, and he blows the boat horn. I almost went for a dive that day.
  • The tire falling off Larry’s boat trailer and spending most of the night in Oswego.
  • Larry dumping gasoline from a boat tank onto a fire at Wellesley Island Park to REALLY GET IT GOING!! The fire traveled up and onto the gas tank in Larry’s hands and everyone scrambled. No one came back out of the woods for half an hour.
  • So cold in May, that 2nd or 3rd year, we never camped in tents again.
  • Navigating the skinny, shallow channel, on the backside, into Lake of the Isles.
  • The night of the Lemon Drops: I’ve never seen a sorrier looking group, the next day. Even worse than the Hard Cider early years…………… “my head’s like a football…………… I think I’m gonna dieeeeeeee………”.
  • No reading allowed in the bathroom rule…..
  • Riding in the back seat of Steve’s SUV, through the night, stuffed in with gear to the ceiling, to the Nipissing Canada trip.
  • On a trip return ride in Larry’s truck: Watching him crack hardboiled eggs on his dash board, knowing one of the eggs is NOT boiled. Like egg Russian Roulette.
  • Easy fishing in the Kris Kraft.
  • American Legion hopping with Dan and Terry. And being poured out of the van when we got back to camp.
  • Going up on my first, and last, ice fishing trip. This is an illogical endeavor.
  • Dave’s barbeques; fantastic. Mark’s scratch clams casino; delish. Steve’s steak pizzaiola; mouth watering. Rod’s seafood veggie rice; scrumptious.
  • All of us kicking up to the song “New York, New York” in the disco in Alexandria Bay. Trying to out-party the Canadians, over here celebrating Queen Victoria day. It was neat to see the car that DID launch down the boat ramp the night before.
  • The martini experiment…I have no memory of the rest of that weekend. Unfortunately there were pictures. We won’t try that again!
  • Larry face-to-face with that fox that came to our cabin on Wellesley Island ……………the four legged kind!
  • Just as we prepare to take our first cast of the day, Ken Heath snagged a lure with trebble hooks into his hand. We couldn’t get it out, so off to Alexandria Bay hospital. Turns out they get this kind of stuff all the time.
